Why is it so hard for Canadian youth experiencing barriers to find work?
Youth unemployment is at a concerning level, nationwide. For many, finding that first job is crucial to future development. Locating an employer that is willing to put in the extra time and resources required to mentor young people is getting harder and harder. While Canada’s economy is booming, sometimes it feels like youth are being left behind. Even the concept of a standard interview or a Canadian style resume is new and requires training. Taking one step further, life can be even more challenging for youth experiencing barriers to entry to the labour market. www.Canadayouthworks.ca was created to help showcase strong employers looking to invest in Canadian youth experiencing these barriers.
Who qualifies as a youth experiencing barriers to the job market?
Canadian youth, generally aged 15-29 who may be experiencing barriers to entry to the labour market. These barriers include, but are not limited to, challenges faced by recent immigrant youth, youth with disabilities, single parent youth, youth who have not completed high school, Indigenous youth, and youth living in rural or remote areas.
Why do we need a specific job board aimed at youth experiencing barriers to the job market? Can’t they use the same job boards as everyone else?
In a perfect world, we would not need an additional job board for youth experiencing barriers. Unfortunately, countless studies have proven a subconscious bias to hire employees with more Canadian experience. The additional time, effort, and mentorship required to hire youth is immense, and we wanted to create a space to showcase the best of the best! At www.Canadayouthworks.ca we aim to highlight employers who are making a commitment to hire these youth. We want to showcase those who are willing to go a step further and welcome these incredible youth to their companies.
I want to hire a youth experiencing barriers to the labour market, but I don’t know if I am equipped to train them. What do I do?
www.Canadayouthworks.ca is a job board and is not able to offer any formal employment advice. That being said, many incredible grants and subsidies do exist to help ease the cost. Do you work with any partners to find qualified applicants for these jobs?
Absolutely. www.Canadayouthworks.ca shares it’s positions with dozens of employment centers across Canada. We work with government-funded initiatives, not for profit organizations, community groups, and local clergy to share these positions across the country. Our goal is to provide a national job board for all youth who may be experiencing barriers to the labour market.
